Where is Uvbi? Cowries from a Prince #MidWeekTease12 #Historical

Hello and welcome to MidWeek Tease organized by Sandra Bunino. Midweek Tease is a platform for authors and writers to give a peep into their published book or Work-In-Progress.

I'm sharing more teasers from my historical romance Work-In-Progress titled, Cowries from a Prince. To read the previous snippets, click here.

Background to today's teaser; Uvbi (heroine) has taken steps to thwart her father's planned action against her. Edokpayi (Uvbi's father) took drastic action

In the scene below, Irinmwian (heroine's mother) is paying a discreet visit to Osarevbie (heroine's stepbrother) and Naru (her husband's guard) in jail.

Cowries from a Prince is set in the ancient City of Igodomigodo in the 1700s.

Enjoy!

Enjoy the Teaser

Cowries from a Prince

Tip-toeing to the backyard, Irinmwian hurriedly filled her woven basket with the cooked food she set aside in the morning. She added the freshly plucked mangoes, pears and bananas.

The clay pot of water leaning against the mud wall caught her attention. Swinging her head from side to side, she filled an empty calabash with water. With jerky movements, she dumped the small gourd into the basket. Covering her basket with banana leaves, she walked through the footpath behind the mud kitchen.

"You are here again?" Greeted the heavily built man with overgrown beard at the prison gate. The first time Irinmwian brought food, he had asked so many questions. After so many trips and gifts, he now welcomed her with a smile.

"Yes. Are they taking care of them?" Her stepson, Osarevbie and her husband's guard, Naru have been in jail for several market days.

"I see them walking around. They have not lost flesh. The prison wardens are taking good care of them just as I promised."

Joy filled her heart. "Thank you." Because she didn’t want them injured or tortured by the criminals in prison, she had to bring him gifts.

Waving at the man, she walked to the police desk. Inside the Police Station, two men argued with the police. They wanted their brother released.

Irinmwian hid behind the mud pillar, until they left. Their brother remained in jail. She didn’t want to be reported to her husband. It was bad enough her hard-hearted husband, Edokpayi had sent her back to her father's house after he found out about Uvbi. To be found visiting those accused of disloyalty could earn her more punishment.

My brothers…I have brought food for Osarevbie and Naru. How are they?"

The short policeman with two big teeth in front looked up from his writing.

He frowned, scratched his bushy dark hair before he greeted her. "Welcome. They have been fairly treated. We placed them in the front cell, where the men have committed petty offense."

Irinmwian sighed. "Thank you, my brother. There are still men in our land who have a kind spirit."

The man put down his pen and grinned. "Hey! Bring the two boys we put in the outer cell this morning. Their mother has come with food."

"Yes sir," a strong male voice called out from behind the post.

"Mother! Mother!" Osarevbie called out. He drew near but the chains around his ankles and wrists stopped him from getting closer.  "Where's Uvbi?"

Tears ran down Irinmwian’s face. "No one knows her whereabouts."

A thin smile passed over Osarevbie's face. Was that relief on his face? It couldn't be. She looked at her husband's loyal servant. Naru's shoulders slumped. The weight of the chains must weigh on his battered frame.

They wore no clothes. Their shorts were torn and worn. They looked like they hadn't washed themselves since they were imprisoned.

"My sons, Osarevbie and Naru, may the God in the sky save you from dying in this place."

It is my father - Cowries from a Prince #MidWeekTease11 #Historical

I'm thrilled to welcome you to MidWeek Tease organized by Sandra Bunino. Midweek Tease is a platform for authors and writers to give a peep into their published book or Work-In-Progress.

On today's run, I'm excited to share a teaser from my historical romance Work-In-Progress titled, Cowries from a Prince. To read the previous snippets, click here.

In this scene, Nagudia, the bronze caster and warrior (hero) has an early visitor to his workshop. I want you meet, Uvbi's (heroine) step brother. He has a message for Nagudia.

Cowries from a Prince is set in the ancient City of Igodomigodo in the 1700s.

Enjoy!
Teaser from Cowries from a Prince

‘May today bring good tidings from our forefathers,’ declared Osarevbie, one of Uvbi’s stepbrothers.

Nagudia set aside the crossbow in his grasp. ‘That’s a good wish from your mouth this morning, Osarevbie. I hope all is well. You have missed your bronze casting lessons for two market days.’
In the past twelve market days, Osarevbie had shown tremendous interest in learning the revered trade of bronze casting from his workshop. And as he was a fast learning apprentice, Nagudia often joked about teaching him the sought after secret of the trade.

Uvbi's stepbrother's eyes squinted at him, his jaw tight as a conga drum.

‘Good morning, Nagudia. I have come here with a heavy heart,’ the young man said, his words sounded forced from his mouth.

Nagudia swung his head round and caught his apprentice, Aisosa stretching his long neck in their direction.

‘Can we speak privately?’ Osarevbie asked, frowning at the intrusion.

Nagudia took in a deep breath. Judging the young man had a lot to say, Nagudia cleared his throat. Turning to his apprentice, he said.

‘Aisosa, I want to go for a short walk. Tell anyone who stops by I’ll be back in a little while.’

‘Yes, master,’ his giraffe-necked apprentice answered.

Nagudia frowned at Aisosa and he bent his head, taking a deep interest in his well-worn woven slippers to avoid his master’s disapproving stare.

How many times have I told Aisosa not to call me master?

Nagudia walked down Igun street with a stiff-lipped Osarevbie by his side. He greeted the palm wine tapper delivering kegs of palm wine at the door step of the Palm Wine Bar.

After a while, the silence worried Nagudia.

‘What troubles you? Osarevbie, speak. I’m all ears. Bare your mind.’ Nagudia urged as they strolled past Dr. Eze’s Herbal Medicine clinic.

‘It is my father. He...he plans to...to punish Uvbi in the most cruel manner in this kingdom within the next market day.'

Nagudia halted under the large pear tree by Uselu junction. His head weighed a ton as though a huge coconut cut open his brain.

The scorching heat and hot breeze blew away his dread. For a long time, he rocked on his heels as blood rushed here and there in his chest.

Nagudia's worst fear had been confirmed. Outside her Edokpayi's compound, Uvbi had mentioned her father's threat - I will hold you responsible if my father carries out his threat, and she had laid the blame at his boot-clad feet.

When he had rescued Uvbi in the bush path four sunsets ago and marched her to her father's compound, he hadn't meant to cause her grief. Since then, her piercing dark eyes have tormented him day and night and her angry words followed him everywhere.

And her heaving chest left him breathing too fast now and again. Not to mention her generous hips and legs that could turn a man's good heart into a sinful cave.

When he turned round, the grief-stricken look on Osarevbie’s face almost broke his stony heart.

Body on fire in Cowries From A Prince #MWTease5 #WIP #Romance

It is fun time again. Happy MidWeek Tease!

MidWeekTease is hosted by Sandra Bunino.

Every Wednesday, writers and authors share a bit from their published work or work-in-progress.

This week's teaser is from my WIP - Cowries from a Prince and it is a follow-up from last week. In this scene, Uvbi has more than a mouthful to say to Nagudia who rescued her from the bush path.

Teaser from Cowries from a Prince

Uvbi's feet rushed through the side of the mud house and stuck her head round the front. There was no one, except the nosy, strong, black man who scared her in the

forest.

She ran out of her father's compound, casting sharp glances over her shoulder. Sure she wasn't seen, Uvbi followed his steps.

"Do you see the trouble you have brought on my head?" Uvbi asked the man with big arms and strong legs. Nagudia stopped and turned round, his frown deepening.

"What trouble do you speak of, young maiden?"

Uvbi pressed her lips together. Is Nagudia such an old oaf as to refer to her as a young maiden? she mused.

"After rescuing me, did you have to bring me back to my father's house? Let not your good deed be evil spoken of!" she rebuked, her chin jutting out.

Nagudia folded his arms across his chest and stared at the young woman
admonishing him for saving her life.

"I see you do not consider your life of great value," he reprimanded. "But your parents do."

Her body shook with the strong waves of his presence, angry posture, his direct words and his sharp stare raking her from her bare shoulders to her hips wrapped in cotton cloth.

The breeze from the east blew hot air through her legs, setting her body on fire. Uvbi stepped back, glared at him and said.

"I will hold you responsible if my father carries out his threat. In my life, I have never seen a man so wise in his own eyes!"

"What threat?" Nagudia asked alarmed, but Uvbi disappeared into her father's compound without a backward stare.

Uvbi's unforgiving words hit Nagudia's chest with a thud. One hand flew to his chest.
How am I going to find out what her father's threat is? Nagudia worried as his gaze remained on Edokpayi's large compound, filled with crowing cocks, laughing hens, bleating goats and sheeps. His throat tightened at the scent of impending trouble.

Why is my chest pounding in Cowries From A Prince #MidWeekTease4 #Historical #Romance

I'm super delighted to welcome you to MidWeek Tease organized by Sandra Bunino. Midweek Tease is a platform for authors and writers to give a peep into their published book or Work-In-Progress.

On MidWeek Tease today, I'm excited to share a teaser from my historical romance Work-In-Progress titled, Cowries from a Prince. This is the first time I'm sharing any part of this manuscript.

In this scene, Nagudia, the bronze caster and warrior (hero) has just rescued the young maiden, Uvbi (heroine) from a fall in the bush path. In the land of Igodomigodo in the 1700s, young maidens are a target of enemy warriors.

Enjoy!

Teaser from Cowries from a Prince

Before Irinmwian could utter a word, Nagudia rushed in with dishevelled Uvbi hot on his heels.

‘Oba ghator ‘kpere,’ meaning-long live the King, Nagudia greeted with the quiet dignity of a Prince.

Hands behind his back, his eyes filled with worry, Uvbi's father, Edokpayi responded. ‘Ise,’ meaning Amen. ‘What brings you here, Nagudia? Did you return my spear?’ he asked.
Uvbi

Nagudia shook his head. ‘No, sir. I haven’t completed the repair of your spear.’ Pointing at Uvbi, he voiced his source of worry. ‘I heard a loud scream in the bush on this hot market day. When I went after the voice, it was that of Uvbi.’ Her parents questioning eyes strayed to their daughter’s.

‘I only took the short footpath to the market. Then I heard footsteps...and as I was rushing, I fell.’ Uvbi confessed, darting an accusing look at her rescuer. ‘He scared me...’
Nagudia

Hissing and sighing, Irinmwian, Uvbi's mother
clapped her hands together in disbelief as she turned her head towards her husband.

‘My husband, I’ve told Uvbi never to take the footpath to the market or to the stream or to anywhere.' Facing her daughter, she placed both hands on her head and wailed.

Nagudia stared at the shocked parents. ‘Our enemies lurk around those thick bushes lying in wait to take our people captive.' Then, he faced the woman he rescued. 'Why didn’t you listen to your mother, Uvbi?’ he asked, his eyes drifting from her head to her chest, to her feet and back to her breast, staring as if in a traunce.

Uvbi's body shook with a strange vibration and she immediately clamped her thighs together. Why is Nagudia staring at me in that particular way? Uvbi asked herself.

The wall of her chest pounded and her breasts danced with excitement to the drum beats of her heart. She dropped her gaze. I have never felt this urgent need for my body to be touched before, her heart wondered.

Will he be her husband for a week? HUSBAND to RENT #CharacterInterview of Fara Damba

Fara, the absolutely gorgeous hero from Flirty & Feisty Romance 6th Novel; HUSBAND to RENT is telling us a bit about himself, and the woman who has a hold on his heart at the moment.

Enjoy our first Character Interview on this blog. There are a few interesting fictional characters still to come from other authors.

Author: Stella Eromonsere-Ajanaku

Book: HUSBAND to RENT

Genre: Romance/Contemporary/Multicultural/Interracial

Who are you?

My name is Fara Damba, the hero in HUSBAND to RENT. I'm thirty years old, six foot five with strong features and a lively moustache. My ex-girlfiend called me handsome and arrogant. I think I am self assured, confident and business minded.

Where are you from?

I am from the 'Smiling Coast of Africa', The Gambia, Banjul. It's a beautiful country for tourists in search of sun, abundant sandy beaches, delightful sea food, friendly people and a unique cultural experience. There's more to Banjul. It is the smallest
country in West Africa and is only six hours away from major European destinations.

Do you have any secrets?

Yes. Don't spread this tale. I once slept with a woman I picked up at the Nightclub in Banjul. I didn't even know her name. It was the first and last time. I didn't even share this secret with Otasowie.

What wakes you up in the middle of the night screaming?

Not having the woman of my dreams by my side. After I met Otasowie in Benin City, Nigeria when I went in search of my Grandpa, I became regularly disturbed. It was crazy not knowing what about her kept me awake because at face value, she isn't my type.

Tell us about the woman who stole your heart?

A woman with egg shell skin colour, attractive curves, glassy honey coloured eyes,
legs that stretch for miles, undeniably sexy dress sense, bold, expressive, flirty with an allure so attention grabbing, I never want to be set free. Her name is Otasowie Idah.

She isn't my usual type, but my restless heart has been captured by her smile and gracious heart.

What do you dislike most in her? Can you live with the flaws?

Before she proposed to me, she was very flirty and forward! That should have turned me off, instead I found myself being drawn to her. She's very flippant, matching my every word, asking questions when I need answers. I suppose I can cope seeing that she's temporarily mine.

How did you get drawn to her?

Her quiet dignity, posture and beauty at our initial meeting at the Registry Office. At our second meeting, I saw pain etched in her eyes. Pain she wasn't willing to share. I was curious. Then, she came up with her ludicrous offer that I should have run away from. I didn't want to run...and I'm glad I didn't!

What makes you angry?  What do you do to control your anger?

When my ego is trampled on or when am taken for granted. Once when Otasowie got me so wound up with her ping pong antics of being flirty one moment and freezing me out when it suited her, I was very rude to her. Afterwards, I wasn't proud of how I treated her.

I cool off by having mini self-talk sessions.

Who do you call when you are in trouble?

My friend and best man, Malick. We've been friends since university and we started our hotel business together a while back after I left my father's  business.

What lengths would you go to protect those you love?

I will swim across the length of River Gambia, skip across several mountains and move any barrier to protect those I love. After Otasowie became my 'wife' and my mother verbally assaulted her in my house, I told my mum where to take her canterkerous attitude.

Tell us 5 really embarrassing facts about yourself.

Five? Haa! That's a bit of a stretch. I burp loudly at home (only), I bite my nails now and again, talk to my self as if I were two people. That will do, any more, I may have to hide away.

What's the worst thing you have ever done whilst drunk?

Pulled down my boxers - back view only! Really crazy. That's way before Otasowie waltzed into my life.

Have you ever killed anyone?

Jeez! Never. Can't even consider it. Life is too precious and I fear God, the Creator. I love the human race.

Have you ever broken the law – if so tell us more!

Yes, I hardly keep the speed limit. Not sure I even know of its existence. When I drove to the airport in search of Otasowie, I must have exhausted the speedometer of my firepower car.

Have you ever had an affair/cheated on your partner. If so who with and was the affair discovered?

Not something I indulge in as a rule. But I have cheated on my girlfriend in the past. Only on one occasion. I cheated on her with a tourist on holiday from Canada.

My girlfriend caught me with hands around her shoulders on the beach. The tourist sang like a bird and I dropped both of them. More like my girlfriend told me to get lost. I learnt a good lesson.

What's currently in your fridge/freezer?

Damoda - meat stewed in peanut puree. That's always in abundance in packed containers. There's Chicken Yassa, that is chicken cooked with fresh lime, onions and ground black
pepper in my fridge. I love food, especially traditional Gambian dishes. My mouth is salivating already.
Barbecued barrauda, butter fish and spicy Atlantic prawns are also within reach. A long list of drinks fill up the fridge door and two shelves.

Describe the room/place in which you are right now?

I'm in the bubbling ancient city of Benin in my hotel room situated along the scenic tree-lined Airport road, hoping and waitng for my 'fiancee' to turn up.

What are your plans for the weekend?

I plan to take Otasowie out to the popular eatery in town where all the young people meet. She knows nothing about it. It is a great place to unwind. Suya is constantly roasting on the open fire, the bar is rowdy and noisy, and in the midst of the chaos, I get all the privacy I want with her...then, I meet her mother...

What are you wearing on your feet at the moment?

Leather sandals. A treasure to have in a sunny country with unbelievable coastal strip. Ideal for walking around. Allows my feet breathe.

If you had to throw out most of your possessions but were only allowed to keep one item, what would that be and why?

My bible. I can survive without many things, but my bible is my number one prized possession. It is the word that has changed my life for eternity. Can't do without my bible.

Thank you for giving me this opportunity to share my inner self. I hope you enjoy finding out how my journey to Benin became a memorable one.

Best wishes,

Fara Damba.

Is Vanessa the Woman to Bring Fred down? BEYOND the LADY #Contemporary #Romance

Fred switched off the entire wall lights. He strained his ear to listen for any strange
sound…but there was none. There was only an eerie silence…

The clutter on the white dining table and chairs were a sorry sight to behold. Picking up the paper litter, he saw it bore the logo of a popular restaurant.

The striped, roller blind was still hanging sky high. He calmly wound down the blind. At least, she didn’t leave the windows and doors open. She has minimal sense of security, if nothing else.

Just to assuage his curiosity, he peeped into the kitchen. Every glass storage jar, cookware and utensil stayed neatly intact, just the way he’d left them.
Meaning? She’d entertained herself and who else?

She obviously hadn’t lifted her lazy, pampered hands to cook for herself. By now, his initial fear had totally seeped out of his spine.

He marched to each of the three bedrooms he’d shown her before he’d left for his business dinner. Only because she hadn’t stated exactly which one of the three she preferred.

She wasn’t in any of the three bedrooms.

At that minute, Fred shifted into panic gear. Did she make good her threat to desert his home? Is she really bent on living her life on the streets? No, not quite on the streets! But in the deluxe hotels around the UK, paid for by her revolting customers.

Where's he going to start looking for the reckless woman? Could she have gone back…?

Large balls of sweat broke out from every pore in his skin…his heart beat erratically. If she disappears into thin air, he would hold himself accountable…

Quickly deciding to go in search of her in the hotel the wealthy, old Charles had paid for, he walked into his bedroom.

And, he stopped short!

Fred lost his natural ability to supply his lungs with oxygen. And yes, he shut his eyes from the bewitching sight of the spread-eagled babe on his duvet cover.

Her hair highlights has changed from black to gold… Vanessa was covered in only tomato red, lace panties and bra.

Fortunately, she's lying face down and fast asleep. Or so he thought…

Her exposed spinal base is deliciously tattooed… His heavy feet moved to sneak a look at her tattoo.

He felt like a peeping Tom. But he's in his own bedroom!

Interestingly, her tattoos are a bow and an arrow. Why fighting images? This woman is an enigma.

Just for the records, he's struggling to ignore her backside, which looks firm and round and seriously inviting...

Vanessa's wanton, nutty and naughtily untamed. No…she's a prostitute!
He must always remember that petite fact. He isn’t keen on sharing his private space with a woman with an established high sexual notoriety.

Swinging into action, he flung open his walk-in-closet, and his bedside chest. Sighing with relief, he filled his arms with the clothes and underwear he needs for the next couple of days.

He didn’t welcome her intrusion into his bedroom but kicking her out isn’t feasible. Before today, he hardly ever allowed his girlfriend access to his room. That
rule didn't apply to this woman he picked up from a hotel who didn't even have the curtsey to ask for his permission before climbing into his bed.

As he took one long, last, look at her spread-eagled form, his bathroom door opened…

And a man about her height, fair skinned but obviously black with dark eyes strolled out of his en-suite bathroom in only boxers! His dark hair was long and wet from taking a shower...
