This week, I have brought you Bride From Angola in central
Africa. I found the traditional wedding custom exciting and unique. I hope you
do too.

Angola is a
country located on the western Atlantic Coast of Central Africa. See the
African map below. It has many neighbours including Namibia, Democratic
Republic of Congo, Zambia and Republic of Congo.
Traditional Angolan Wedding Ceremony:
Angolan traditional marriage ceremonies vary from tribe to tribe. To demonstrate
his willingness to marry their daughter and desire to be accepted into her
family, the groom works in the bride’s father’s fields, or farms.
In addition, he also performs various household chores for the bride’s mother as part of the traditional wedding practice.
Once the bride's family approves of the groom, an older woman from the
groom's family starts training the bride on how to be a good wife.
During and after an Angolan traditional wedding, the Wedding consultant plays a prominent role.
On the actual day of the wedding, the wedding consultant carries the bride on her back to the groom’s house. However, in some cases, if she can’t physically carry the bride then she walks with her to the groom’s home.
The wedding consultant organizes the engagement, carries the bride to the wedding chamber, checks up on the couple the morning after their first night of marriage to make sure everything is well with the newly-wedded couple.
According to Angolan customary weddings, the groom’s
family gives gifts to the bride’s family. For a groom who has a good source of
income, he presents clothing and other gifts to the bride and her family in
lieu of working in the farms, fields and around the house.
The groom has a duty to prepare the matrimonial
bed. He spreads leaves from the negwelulu tree as
these leaves are believed to intensify sexual excitement.

After the wedding ceremony there is a lot of merrymaking, singing, dancing with lots of food and drink served to the enjoyment of the guests.
Interestingly, after the wedding, the groom and his
new mother-in-law are not allowed to meet again until after the couple’s first
child is born.
