Author: Kelly Abell

New Release: Mabe's Burden (Saving Shenanigans)

Genre: Literature & Fiction/Anthologies & Literature Collection/Drama & Plays

Character: Mabel O'Banyon

What is your full name? Describe your looks (include colour of hair & eyes) and personality?

My name is Mabel O’Banyon, but please call me Mabe.  I mean, who names their kid Mabel these days?  Apparently it’s an Irish tradition in my family.  Sheesh!

Where do you live and where does your family originate from? How old are you today? Do you have siblings do you have?

I’m the third daughter of an Irish immigrant.  My da moved to the states before we were born.

He met my mother and moved to Monticello, FL to open Shenanigans our family pub.  I have two sisters, Meg and Mara.

What do you do for a living? What do you do for leisure?

I wish I had time for leisure.  Right now I’m busy tending bar at our pub.  My da just passed away and left me $200,000 in debt to a mobster.  Gee thanks Da. As if your drunkenness and gambling wasn’t enough while you were alive.

What is your best friend's name and how would your friends describe you?

My best friends are my sisters, Meg and Mara.  With the way we grew up, outside friendships weren’t really an option, but we made do.

Have you ever cheated on your lover? Who did you cheat with? How did you get tempted? Why do you think you couldn't resist?

Just got involved with Aaron Shaw a commercial real estate developer who wants to buy my pub.  I’m not sure I trust him 100% yet, so we’ll see...

Are you in a relationship or do you have a crush on someone? Describe him/her to our readers?

Aaron is so sexy and I just can’t believe the power he has over me.  He’s tall, muscular, whiskey colored eyes and rather long dark hair.  When he wears jeans with a sport coat? I’m done.  Katie bar the door!

How did you meet him/her? Is there anything noteworthy about your meeting? What draws you to him/her?

I hated him at first.  I thought he was just after my bar.  He kept offering me more money than it is worth and I’m still not so sure I trust him, but he’s super sexy and there’s this weird electricity that sparks between us.  And did I say he was a really good lover?

Why is he/she the one you want to spend the rest of your life with? Do you want have children?

OH....not ready to go there yet. Time will tell on the marriage thing.

What do you dislike most in he/her? Can you live with the flaws?

He’s pushy and argumentative.  I’m running one step ahead of the mob to save my bar and he just wants to swoop in like some knight in shining armour.  But what he doesn’t get is the bar is mine.  I’ve slaved over it and earned the success it has.  It won’t be something I’m willing to give up.

Here are other A -Z answers from Mabe O'Banyon. Get to know her even more.

Where would your dream vacation be?

Ireland.

If you could change one thing about you, what would that be?

My red hair.

Do you have pets? What’s your pet’s names?

Baths.

Do you prefer the city or the country and why?

Country. Have you ever visited Monticello, FL? Nuff said.

Have you ever broken a bone? Where did it happen?

OMG it is so funny you asked this.  When I first met Aaron I hated him.  I went jogging one morning and as I ran by the bed and breakfast he was staying in he came barreling around the corner and we ran smack into each other.  When I fell backward I broke my arm.

What is the most embarrassing moment of your life?

Uh, the incident above. LOL!

One meal you can't do without?

If you could only have one drink, what will it be?

Lamborghini.

What is your favourite ice cream flavour?

Moose Tracks.

Do you have any phobias?

heights.

What makes you grumpy?

My hair.

What's the most exciting moment of your life?

When my sister came home with a niece I didn’t know I had!

What book would you recommend for others to read?

To Kill A Mockingbird.

Do you have allergies?

Nope.

What is your best physical feature?

My eyes.

Have you ever had your heart broken?

Yes, but I don’t want to talk about it.

What do you want most in life?

To save my family’s pub from the mobsters my da owed money to.

When was the last time you cried?

Yesterday.

Preferred fragrance or perfume?

Can’t stand the stuff.

Do you have a wish? What for?

World Peace. Nah I’m kidding.  I mean I do want World Peace, but right now I’d settle for $200,000 to pay off the mobsters. Know anyone?

AUTHOR BIO

I can't remember a time when I didn't want to write.  From the time I was learned enough to string sentences together I liked writing stories.  In high school I was the literary editor of our school magazine Sketches and had a series of short stories that I'd written even then.  I'm published with two wonderful publishers, World Castle and Solstice Publishing, and on my own as an Indie.

I live in Florida with my two adult children and my husband of 30+ years.  I have a wonderful dog named Snickers that can even open her own Christmas presents! (don't believe me?  Look below) When I'm not working full time in the insurance industry, I write.  I believe any writer should write because they love the craft. The rest will come in time.  I hope you enjoy reading my stories as much as I've enjoyed writing them

BLURB

Hot tempered, Mabe O'Banyon will do whatever it takes to keep the family's Irish pub, Shenanigans, out of the mob's dirty hands. She quickly learns, though, their attorney and the bank will offer no help. So, she calls in the reinforcements--Mara and Meg. She hasn't seen her two sisters for years, but her desperate message brings them running.

Commercial real estate developer, Aaron Shaw has a secret. He arrives in Monticello, FL, expecting to purchase a quaint Irish pub and move on to his next conquest. But the transaction doesn't take place as planned--in fact, it doesn't take place at all. The hardheaded owner--a stunning redhead with curves that don't quit--isn't selling.

With time running out and the mob on their heels, Aaron wants nothing more than to save the woman he's fallen for from impending danger. Mabe is torn between a man she loves but can't trust and the need to hold on to her family's pub. Their choices lead them down a path neither could have guessed.

EXCERPT

When Mabe meets Aaron Shaw for the first time. The door to the pub swung open for a tall, ebony haired man wearing an expensive tan suit. Mabe straightened. Riveted, she stared at his strikingly angular face. His chin, grooved by a slight dimple, struck her as sexy.

His gaze roamed the bar, settling on her. Warmth radiated through her entire body. Never had she felt such an intense attraction to a man. Who the hell is he? She didn’t recall ever seeing him in the pub.

Her nerves tingled. Resembling a panther, he wove his way through the crowd. Slightly ashamed of her attraction to a strange man at her father’s wake, she turned her back, resuming her position behind the bar. She spoke to several patrons, mentally noting their drink orders on her way.

“No one could pull a pint like your da,” an old grizzled man at the end of the mahogany counter stated. “Smooth like silk he was.”

Mabe smiled. “He was, Angus. We’ll miss him.” She handed a frothy mug to the man. “Here you go. Enjoy that.”

“I will,” Angus declared, raising his glass to her. “To many years.”

She picked up a glass of Coke, clinked it against Angus’s mug. “And to you.”

“I’ll have one of those if you don’t mind,” a deep voice spoke from behind her.

Turning, ready with a flirty response on her tongue, she came face to face with her handsome stranger. His eyes matched the deep rich mahogany of the bar. His smile, while slightly crooked, seemed genuine and swept the words right out of her brain.
“Uh…sure. Name your poison.”

“Guinness?”
Mabe nodded, pulled the beer, scraping the foam from the top. “I’ve never seen you here before. What’s your name, and how did you know my dad?”

His gaze caught hers, sympathy reflected in his eyes. She tried to look away, but she couldn’t. The man was a god.

“I’m sorry for your loss.”
“Thanks. He will be missed for sure.”

“I just realized…this is his wake, isn’t it? A private party?”
She nodded. “It is.”

The man smiled gently. “I’m sorry. I’m afraid I’m intruding. I should go.”

She set the beer in front of him. “Nah, we’re all friends here. It is a private party, but stay if you’d like.” She gestured. “Those are my sisters Meg and Mara. We own the place now.”

“It’ll be hard to run it without your father, won’t it?”

Mabe sighed, leaning on her elbows. “It won’t be the same, for sure, but we’ll do okay. It’ll take some work….” She glanced lovingly around the pub with all its Irish paraphernalia adorning he walls. “Da, loved this place. I grew up here. It’s our place. We’ll make it work.”

She shivered, feeling his intense stare. Her skin burned under the laser scan of his eyes. Her pulse jumped. If the room were empty except for the two of them, he’d be in some serious trouble. He took a sip of the Guinness, still staring at her over the mug.

She licked her lips then broke the gaze. She swiped at the glossy mahogany top with a rag. “What brings you to town?”

“Business,” was his response.

“Ooh, cryptic, are we?” She flirted.

“Suits me for now.”

A man at the end of the counter signaled for her. She held up a finger then approached her guest. She served a few more beers, all the while being extremely aware of his gaze. His allure was more powerful than any she’d ever experienced. Monticello wasn’t full of dashing men in expensive suits, but it had its fair share of good lookers. Lord knew she’d flirted with some from time to time, even dated a few, but none of them stirred in her what this man did.

No longer needed, she returned to him, eyeing his empty mug. “Another?”
He nodded, offered her a smile.

Her knees weakened. She steadied herself by grasping the smooth wood. What the hell is wrong with me? She pulled his beer, but before she handed it to him she asked, “What did you say your name was?”
He chuckled. “I didn’t.”

She set the mug down in front of him. “Oh, come on. You’re not going to waltz into my pub during my daddy’s wake and not tell me who you are. It’s not polite.”
One dark eyebrow rose. “Not polite, huh?”

“Not at all,” she declared, leaning on the bar, offering him her most dazzling smile.
“Okay then…if you insist.

“I do.”
He held out his hand. Mabe reached out, taking his warm palm in hers. The air between them practically crackled with tension. “Aaron Shaw.”
Her previously heated blood froze.

In one swift moment, all the allure she’d experienced earlier evaporated. This is the shark trying to buy my pub. The nerve of this man, waltzing in here, flirting with me, when all the while he’s casing the joint for a future purchase. She grabbed his beer unceremoniously dumping it on his head. The dark brew dripped from his hair all over his tan suit.

“What the hell?” he shouted, jumping off the stool.
“Get out of my pub,” she yelled at him.

Will he be her husband for a week? HUSBAND to RENT #CharacterInterview of Fara Damba

Fara, the absolutely gorgeous hero from Flirty & Feisty Romance 6th Novel; HUSBAND to RENT is telling us a bit about himself, and the woman who has a hold on his heart at the moment.

Enjoy our first Character Interview on this blog. There are a few interesting fictional characters still to come from other authors.

Author: Stella Eromonsere-Ajanaku

Book: HUSBAND to RENT

Genre: Romance/Contemporary/Multicultural/Interracial

Who are you?

My name is Fara Damba, the hero in HUSBAND to RENT. I'm thirty years old, six foot five with strong features and a lively moustache. My ex-girlfiend called me handsome and arrogant. I think I am self assured, confident and business minded.

Where are you from?

I am from the 'Smiling Coast of Africa', The Gambia, Banjul. It's a beautiful country for tourists in search of sun, abundant sandy beaches, delightful sea food, friendly people and a unique cultural experience. There's more to Banjul. It is the smallest
country in West Africa and is only six hours away from major European destinations.

Do you have any secrets?

Yes. Don't spread this tale. I once slept with a woman I picked up at the Nightclub in Banjul. I didn't even know her name. It was the first and last time. I didn't even share this secret with Otasowie.

What wakes you up in the middle of the night screaming?

Not having the woman of my dreams by my side. After I met Otasowie in Benin City, Nigeria when I went in search of my Grandpa, I became regularly disturbed. It was crazy not knowing what about her kept me awake because at face value, she isn't my type.

Tell us about the woman who stole your heart?

A woman with egg shell skin colour, attractive curves, glassy honey coloured eyes,
legs that stretch for miles, undeniably sexy dress sense, bold, expressive, flirty with an allure so attention grabbing, I never want to be set free. Her name is Otasowie Idah.

She isn't my usual type, but my restless heart has been captured by her smile and gracious heart.

What do you dislike most in her? Can you live with the flaws?

Before she proposed to me, she was very flirty and forward! That should have turned me off, instead I found myself being drawn to her. She's very flippant, matching my every word, asking questions when I need answers. I suppose I can cope seeing that she's temporarily mine.

How did you get drawn to her?

Her quiet dignity, posture and beauty at our initial meeting at the Registry Office. At our second meeting, I saw pain etched in her eyes. Pain she wasn't willing to share. I was curious. Then, she came up with her ludicrous offer that I should have run away from. I didn't want to run...and I'm glad I didn't!

What makes you angry?  What do you do to control your anger?

When my ego is trampled on or when am taken for granted. Once when Otasowie got me so wound up with her ping pong antics of being flirty one moment and freezing me out when it suited her, I was very rude to her. Afterwards, I wasn't proud of how I treated her.

I cool off by having mini self-talk sessions.

Who do you call when you are in trouble?

My friend and best man, Malick. We've been friends since university and we started our hotel business together a while back after I left my father's  business.

What lengths would you go to protect those you love?

I will swim across the length of River Gambia, skip across several mountains and move any barrier to protect those I love. After Otasowie became my 'wife' and my mother verbally assaulted her in my house, I told my mum where to take her canterkerous attitude.

Tell us 5 really embarrassing facts about yourself.

Five? Haa! That's a bit of a stretch. I burp loudly at home (only), I bite my nails now and again, talk to my self as if I were two people. That will do, any more, I may have to hide away.

What's the worst thing you have ever done whilst drunk?

Pulled down my boxers - back view only! Really crazy. That's way before Otasowie waltzed into my life.

Have you ever killed anyone?

Jeez! Never. Can't even consider it. Life is too precious and I fear God, the Creator. I love the human race.

Have you ever broken the law – if so tell us more!

Yes, I hardly keep the speed limit. Not sure I even know of its existence. When I drove to the airport in search of Otasowie, I must have exhausted the speedometer of my firepower car.

Have you ever had an affair/cheated on your partner. If so who with and was the affair discovered?

Not something I indulge in as a rule. But I have cheated on my girlfriend in the past. Only on one occasion. I cheated on her with a tourist on holiday from Canada.

My girlfriend caught me with hands around her shoulders on the beach. The tourist sang like a bird and I dropped both of them. More like my girlfriend told me to get lost. I learnt a good lesson.

What's currently in your fridge/freezer?

Damoda - meat stewed in peanut puree. That's always in abundance in packed containers. There's Chicken Yassa, that is chicken cooked with fresh lime, onions and ground black
pepper in my fridge. I love food, especially traditional Gambian dishes. My mouth is salivating already.
Barbecued barrauda, butter fish and spicy Atlantic prawns are also within reach. A long list of drinks fill up the fridge door and two shelves.

Describe the room/place in which you are right now?

I'm in the bubbling ancient city of Benin in my hotel room situated along the scenic tree-lined Airport road, hoping and waitng for my 'fiancee' to turn up.

What are your plans for the weekend?

I plan to take Otasowie out to the popular eatery in town where all the young people meet. She knows nothing about it. It is a great place to unwind. Suya is constantly roasting on the open fire, the bar is rowdy and noisy, and in the midst of the chaos, I get all the privacy I want with her...then, I meet her mother...

What are you wearing on your feet at the moment?

Leather sandals. A treasure to have in a sunny country with unbelievable coastal strip. Ideal for walking around. Allows my feet breathe.

If you had to throw out most of your possessions but were only allowed to keep one item, what would that be and why?

My bible. I can survive without many things, but my bible is my number one prized possession. It is the word that has changed my life for eternity. Can't do without my bible.

Thank you for giving me this opportunity to share my inner self. I hope you enjoy finding out how my journey to Benin became a memorable one.

Best wishes,

Fara Damba.

Are You Insecure About Your #Appearance?

A woman worries about her appearance more than she'll admit.

It was with sympathy and understanding I watched Rebecca Adlington, British Olympic four time gold medallist and OBE (Order of the British Empire) recipient burst into tears on the TV show, I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here 2013...

Twenty-four year old Rebecca's insecurities about her physical appearance came to light as she sat side by side with twenty-one year old Amy Willerton, Miss Universe (GB) who was clad in skimpy bikini showing off her perfectly shaped figure to the hilt.
It hurt me to watch Rebecca, a stunningly beautiful, tall, leggy and lovely skin young woman tell herself she isn't good looking. She told millions of viewers of her frustration that twitter followers and the public focus more on her appearance than her performance.

She says once she steps out of the shower or pool, she grabs a towel to cover up!

I've got a burn scar on my leg and so does my teenage daughter! The scar doesn't stop me wearing short dresses or skirts. I'm still counselling my daughter to accept her scar, to live with it and to love herself.

MY ADVICE TO BECKY & OTHERS :

Never take criticism about your physical appearance to heart because beauty isn't skin deep!

Know that many 'perfect looking' models, beauty queens and actresses suffer from insecurities about their appearance too.

Hey! We can't all be the same size, shape and height, no matter how hard we try. Accept that you're more than the way you look. You've got personality, character, attitude, values and belief.

Don't expect everyone to cheer you on. The more successful you are, the more a few charlatans want to pull you down. The best way to slice a woman to size is to throw digs about her figure. Ignore them.

If you can do something about your weight, go ahead. If you've tried and lost, move on and love yourself.

Learn to laugh at what you find less appealing about yourself. Borrow a leaf from Vincent Simone, Strictly Come Dancing Professional Dancer who introduced himself to his camp mates as, 'I'm Vincent Simone, I have a lisp and I am Italian!'

On a final note, Rebecca Adlington, you're a BEAUTIFUL woman and so is Amy Willerton.

Amy and Rebecca have been lovely examples of beauty and depth.

THE GARDENER's ICE MAIDEN is Flirty & Feisty Romance Novel #4

Sub-titleWhen A Dentist Meets Her Match In Her Gardener!

I was inspired to write The Gardener's Ice Maiden, an Interracial/Multicultural romance because of the challenges pregnant teenagers face within their families and the wider society.

The truth is young and naive girls are constantly falling prey to smooth talking randy men who dump them and their unborn child the moment she reveals she's pregnant.

Families take extreme measures to hide the truth to protect the family name, for religious reasons, to ensure their daughter carries on with her education and to save her the embarrassment of being referred to as a 'fairly used' woman!

Also, educated single women with great jobs tend to scoff at single men who are in low paid jobs. They find it ridiculous that such men aspire to climb up the status tree to ask for a date!

In The Gardener's Ice Maiden, Olivia Gleave, a British young girl from a small town in England fell pregnant before she turned twenty. Her mother, a high profile society lady was extremely disappointed and mortified. She bundled Olivia away from society's prying eyes and callously gave away the child to Olivia's aunt.

After she gave birth, Olivia was sent abroad to continue her degree program. Her mother's aim was to wipe away her little indiscretion from society's memory.

When Olivia returned to New Ferry town as a brilliant dentist, she started to undo her domineering mother's unjust actions. Her emotional battle began when she advertised for a gardener to spruce up the landscape of her new home.

When she employed Oliver Pedro, a Nigerian gardener with huge confidence, swagger and skill to tend her garden, she didn't bargain on how easily he'll win over her son and attempt to take over her life. She resists him every step of the way.

BLURB

Will The Ice Queen Thaw?
When a single mum and brilliant dental consultant Olivia Gleave woke up to the reality that she was entangled in her gardener’s snare, she found it laughable. But when she found out too late that he's an ex-convict and an ex-gang member, it is confirmation their paths are different.
His Pride Was At Stake
What the arrogant gardener wants, he pursues vigorously. Oliver Gbadeyan Pedro set his eyes on the well-bred, blue-blooded, Ice Queen of the prominent Gleave’s family Manor. In his bid to get her, he pays a huge price.
His sacrifice comes back to haunt him in the way he least expects. Will his search for the woman who's completely out of his financial, social and moral status be a total waste of time? Or do they have more in common than they both realize?
Come on board for this emotionally relaxing experience.

LOITERING SHADOWS Excerpt

Totally afraid to sever the connection, she waited…his head descending so slowly, she could hardly breathe as the scent of his bath soap tangled her in the intricate web of the strong fragrance.

Can #Love Survive #Immigration Challenges?

A few weekends ago, I watched a Nollywood movie titled, ANCHOR BABY.

Considering I am an immigrant in the UK, my heart twitched a few times at the picture of an

African husband being forced away by Immigration Offciers from his beloved wife because his visa had expired.

He begged his pregnant wife who'd gone out for a walk to stay back in the US. Watching from a corner, she saw her husband being dragged away. She wept... She was lonely... She faced many challenges...and in the end... (Go and Watch the Film).

How times have changed!

Several centuries ago, the British journeyed to Africa and Asia to beg Engineers and other professionals to come over to  the UK to work in different sectors.

Families willingly relocated and helped to build foreign countries and fight wars.

During the Slave Trade era, many Africans were chained hand and foot and were forcefully taken away from their kinsmen to live and work on various plantations in America, Britain and other countries.

Many families lost men, women and children that never returned home. Families were flung apart. These Slaves built these countries with their blood and sweat.

As recently as the swinging 60's and booming 70's the Nigerian currency - Naira was at par with the British pounds (£1 to 1Naira). Many Nigerians came to study in the UK and several returned home because home is where the heart is.

My own father lived, studied and worked in the UK in the 60s -70s as a Radiographer. He's retired and lives in our hometown in Nigeria.

I found myself wishing my dad hadn't returned home. If he'd gotten his British citizenship in the 70s, myself and my siblings would have had an easy ride relocating here when the tide turned in Nigeria.

In recent years, Africa has witnessed massive brain drain of professionals and artisans seeking brighter future for their families abroad.

I belong to this group of migrants. My husband and I plus our children relocated to the UK in 2007.
We've had an amazing time. We've experienced the fabulous, the challenging, the stressful and the victorious times. In all, God is with us.

The challenges migrant face abroad are varied and daunting. The problems test your spiritual and moral values.

Desperation to remain in a foreign country pushes married couples to consider painful options. This may involve others exploiting their circumstances to rip them of their hard earned money, their children or other valuable assets.

Faced with the constant threat of visa expiration and deportation, many couples enter into sham marriages.

In some instances, they pay a Citizen huge sums of money to get their Citizenship. The UK government is clamping down on such marriages and reporting it in the media.

Fake couples have to live together to provide proof that the marriage is 'real'. Quiet often, the fake
marriages result in unplanned pregnancies. Unplanned by the Migrant, but maybe planned by the Citizen who suddenly wants more out of the 'relationship' than was originally agreed.

In this case, the Migrant's original husband or wife is left without their legal spouse because they're caught in the overwhelming web of immigration challenges.

In other cases, Citizens 'rent' out their passport and valid documents to illegal immigrants for a fee - monthly payback. The migrants then have to work multiple low paid jobs, stay away from home and their families to make ends meet.

Consquently, Migrants may get blackmailed or threatened by the Citizen paid to 'assist'. Finding themselves helpless, they either meet the grievous demands of the blackmailer or face the wrath of the law.

In various scenario above, the married couples or lovers face countless challenges, they get thrown apart, their marriages may collaspe and their children get caught out. Some children may get taken to Foster families if their parents end up in jail!

Personally, there's celebration in our household because our STAY in the UK was recently granted. Our gratitude goes to God Almighty for leading us to a foreign land, blessing us with supportive network of great friends, Priest and Church members that held us up with their love, prayers, friendship and resources when we were down.

MY ADVICE to immigrants toiling in foreign lands across the world;

1. Make the RIGHT choices at all times. Choices that will not HURT your marriage and children.

2. Make each decision by weighing the consequences. Can you live with your wrists being
shackled with handcuffs or being thrown into jail or being ruthlessly deported back home by immigration officials with a mandate to get rid of illegal immigrants?

3.There's a God that stands beside foreigners! Believe it or not. But you've got to make GODLY choices, not seemingly EASY choices.

4. When you fall into hard times, PRAY! You will get help from unexpected sources. My family did!

5. When you're tempted into options you know will lead you into TROUBLE, stand back and act WISELY.

6. Remember, no matter how long it takes, the long arm of the law waits to catch up with those who exploit the system. Your 'friends' or enemies may tip off the authorities and just when you sit in the comfort of your home, the officials pound down the door and kick you back home or into prison.

7. KNOW that when you FALL, you will RISE again. As long as you don't GIVE UP!

To summarise, MIGRATION isn't a crime. It is illegal migration that throws up innumerable difficulties that tear families apart for generations.

Residents of the UK especially Africans are unbelievably warm, friendly and very supportive of immigrants.

I wish all Migrants success in their quest to find a better future for themselves and their families.

I'm taking this opportunity to say THANK YOU  and GOD BLESS the many families, individuals, neighbours, our Priest and his family and our Church members who have been an amazing support for my family through our continuous stay in the UK.

Ugo’ji

is an outcast, an untouchable. She lives on the fringe of society as the lowest

of the low, a living sacrifice to the gods. The only person she interacts with

is her aged grandmother Nne who nurtures her powerful gift of healing. Until

the day she meets Ebube a strange warrior to their lands. He  ignites a yearning within her

she's unable to

ignore.

Ebube

is drawn to the young maiden with the emerald green eyes who possesses the body

of a goddess and the healing touch of an angel. But he is forbidden from mating

with a human and the consequence is the wrath of the gods.

Moreover

he is on a mission. If he fails, the gates of hell will be opened and the earth

plunged into darkness. He cannot stay and she cannot go with him.

Excerpt

Help me...Do whatever it takes...Keep the gates of Alamuo sealed.

Darkness tugged at him and threatened to pull him into its murky depths. With a jerk, Ebube sat

up on his pallet. The creaking wood and thumping of his heart echoed in his acutely

responsive ears.

Danger seeped from the nightmare he couldn’t remember into the air, leaden and oppressive.

His breath heaved as he choked, his throat clogged with the fetid stench of death.</ span>

On reflex, he extended his right arm, grabbing the scabbard he always kept within reach, the

pitch shadow no hindrance for his sharp eyesight. As a leopard-shifter, his

vision was excellent, night and day. He didn't need to look at his hands to see

the extended claws. Sharp tips dug into his palm. He ignored the sting and his

awkward grip on the carved wooden hilt of the single edge sword.

His beast came to the fore, clawing to take over, an instinctive response to potential

threats. Muscles tensed, Ebube fought the shift. Sweat streaked down his body

in rivulets. He swiped his face with his left palm, stopping the liquid from

dripping into his eyes.

Sweeping his gaze across the large, airy chamber of his sparsely-decorated home, he sought

the source of danger setting off his internal alarm.

Apart from the raised bamboo sleeping platform covered in padded deer hide and the wooden

trunk that stored his personal belongings, the only other items were his tools

of warfare – his spears, shields, machetes and scabbards. They hung on the

single-rung mantel against the burnt-umber rock wall, gleaming with polish and

sharpness, ready for use.  Undisturbed.

A tingle ran up his spinal column, the way it always did when he sensed something out of place.

Something terribly wrong. He swung his legs around. Cool unglazed stone flooring

met his bare feet. The muscles on his back tensed, primed for action. Slowly,

he stood to his full height and walked through the room.

His home consisted of two chambers, one for sleeping and the other for entertaining

guests. Though as a guardian, a special warrior of the gods, he could live as

luxuriously as the gods did, they had agreed communally to live as simply as

humans of the era so as not to draw attention to themselves as supernatural

beings.

Nothing was out of place in his rooms, no stray, malevolent being in the vicinity. Yet the tingling

in his bones didn't dissipate. When he found nothing inside, he grabbed the

wooden knob, opened the door and walked onto the corridor linking his residence

to the rest of his family's. Their homes were hewn out of Amauwa rocks, a hill

range in the middle of the rain forest.

He stopped in front of the last house, the tension on his shoulders increasing. Nothing

lurked inside it, living or inanimate. Yet the memory of the previous occupant

flooded his mind, hitting him low in the abdomen, spreading pain through his

body. Gritting his teeth, he shook his head and turned his back to the building

and its unwelcome memories.
