Upcoming #Historical #Romance - Royal Cowries (Cowries Series #1)

The time has come for me to climb across romance genres. As you know, I have published eight Flirty & Feisty Contemporary Romance Novels.

But my first historical romance, titled - Royal Cowries (Cowries Series #1) is due to be published in less than 2months! I'm buzzing.

This is a huge milestone for me. The manuscript was first written years ago. I didn't have the time or courage to complete it. But in 2015, the hero - Nagudia and heroine - Uvbi, attacked my peace of mind and demanded their story be published with immediate effect. Lol!

I'm going to share the draft blurb and book cover. Please take a peek and let me know what you think.

To also whet your appetite for Royal Cowries, I'm re-blogging one of the excerpts I previously shared on MidWeek Tease.

BOOK COVER

Dariel Raye was the first person to take a look at the blurb. She shared her comments and I'm grateful.

BLURB - ROYAL COWRIES

In the land of Igodomigodo in 1470, a man's word was law.

But in the hand of a wild maiden, Uvbi, lies the future, where women might have a say. When her freedom is endangered, Uvbi issues a threat to Nagudia before she disappears.

Nagudia, a renowned bronze caster conceals his past to gain freedom, but when he hears a scream in the bush, he takes action and his destiny becomes intertwined with Uvbi's.

Are their lives destined together or will the journey to come uncover truths that will throw them apart?
EXCERPT

Uvbi's feet rushed through the side of the mud house and she stuck her head round the front. There was no one, except the retreating back of the nosy, strong, dark man who scared her in the forest.

She ran out of her father's compound, casting sharp glances over her shoulder. Sure she wasn't seen, Uvbi followed Nagudia’s footsteps.

‘Do you see the trouble you have brought upon me?’ Uvbi accused the man with broad chest and narrow waist wrapped in cow hide. Nagudia stopped and swivelled on his heels, his frown deepened. As tall as she was, this man still looked down at her.

‘What trouble do you speak of, young maiden?"

Uvbi pressed her lips together.

Is Nagudia such an old oaf as to refer to her as a young maiden? She mused.

‘My name is Uvbi,’ she corrected. ‘After scaring me to death in the bush, did you have to bring me back to my father's house? Let not your good deed be evil spoken of!" she rebuked, her chin jutting out, hands akimbo.

Nagudia folded his arms across his chest and stared at her. ‘Are you admonishing me for saving your life? I see you do not consider your life of great value,’ he reprimanded. ‘But your parents do.’

With one hand on the dagger slung at his waist, Nagudia pinned her with his hard stare.

Waves after shock waves reverberated across her body. His presence, the angry posture, his dismissive words and sharp stare raked her bare shoulders and hips.

The breeze from the east blew hot air through her legs, setting her body on edge. Uvbi stepped back, glared at him and warned. ‘I will hold you responsible if my father carries out his threat,’ adding, ‘throughout my life, I have never seen a man so wise in his own eyes!’

His jaw worked up and down and his palm tightened on his weapon. ‘What threat?’ Nagudia asked, alarm in his eyes, but she slipped into her father's compound without a backward stare.

#Brides From #Africa 1- #BiniBride #Edo #Nigeria

Welcome to Brides from Africa

Every so often, I will share photos of brides from different parts of Africa. In addition, I will reveal one or two facts.

On this first slot, I have photos of brides from my native place of Benin, Edo state, in South-South Nigeria in West Africa. The people of Benin speak Bini language.

Courtsey of Tripdownmemorylane
Bini brides wear several layers of red coral beads (called Ivie) as an adornment on their heads, neck, wrists and fingers.

The beaded coral crown on the bride's head is called okuku.

IVIE is another specie of coral beads, an important type of jewelry worn by Edo chiefs. This kind is described as precious coral. It has a hard core that can be polished to bring out beautiful red, rose, or pink colours.

On the wedding day, The OKA EGBE (eldest male) of the woman's family would normally preside over the ceremony. Kola nuts and wine are presented. Prayers are said and the kola nuts are broken and shared.

The marriage ceremony involves the DOWRY payment which includes a small sum of money. Gifts for mother of the bride and IROGHAE - members of the extended family would be part of the settlement.

During the ceremony, a few 'fake brides' march in for the groom to choose his bride. As expected, he rejects each woman.

Then, his bride is heralded in with traditional music in a her majestic bridal outfit.

Amidst prayers, laughter and sometimes tears, the bride would be carefully hoisted on the lap of the OKA EGBE of the groom's family or her father-in-law.

And afterwards, she is also hoisted on the groom's laps.

There would of course be a lot of merriment on the day of marriage as the bride and the bridegroom are presented openly to the two families.

Thank you for visiting. Please leave me a comment.

If you have bridal photos to share from your place, send it to me via email and I'll share it here and give you credit. I love romance and swooning over bride photos is my hobby.
