EXCERPT
When he entered the room lined with
books, which had belonged to his parents and all of his brothers, Nick was
sitting on the edge of the desk holding a folded newspaper. Vic closed the
door. “What do you want to show me? Are you in some kind of trouble?”
“No, but you might be.” He opened the
paper and handed it to Vic. “Turn to page nineteen.”
Vic looked at the front page and frowned.
“Rolling Out? I doubt there’s anything in there I’d want to read?”
His brother crossed his arms and waited
while he thumbed through the pages then froze when he saw the pictures. When he
flicked on the green banker’s lamp sitting on the table, he wished he hadn’t.
The local entertainment/news tabloid had a center spread of events around the
city from the previous weekend. The chain on the lamp swung wildly when he
slammed his hand on the table seeing the shots of Mona and Patterson dancing
together. In one he had his hands on her hips, and in the other hers were
clasped around his neck. These were worse than the Jezebel photos. Vic cursed,
folded the paper and shoved it under his arm.
“Did you know about this?”
“Yeah, a friend of mine showed me
pictures in Jezebel magazine this afternoon.”
“Are you and Mona all right?”
Vic snorted and searched for words to
explain to Nick what was going on in his marriage and, at the same time,
imagining how photos of Heather and him in Chicago would’ve looked. He let out
a loud sigh. “We’re having some issues right now.”
“What’s she thinking? He’s younger than I
am.” Nick sounded dumbfounded.
Vic’s eyes stretched. “That’s the only
thing you have a problem with?”
“No, but it just seems out of character
for Mona. Is she seeing him?”
“I don’t know. Please don’t mention this
to Mama or Daddy, okay?”
“Don’t worry. They won’t hear it from me,
but you know Mama’s had a subscription to Jezebel for as long as I can
remember.”
Nick was right. Vic recalled seeing the
publication on the cocktail table in his parents’ house. “Oh, hell. Let me get
out of here before Mama comes home. Thanks for showing me these. Tell the rest
of them I said goodnight.” He slipped out of the front door unnoticed and got
into his car with volcanoes erupting
behind his eyelids, wanting nothing more than to destroy this punk who had the
barefaced boldness to put his hands on another man’s wife. His wife. The steering wheel suffered the brunt of his anger as he
pounded it several times.
Beneath the anger, he was tormented by
conflicting emotions. Seeing Mona receive the obvious attention of another man
filled him with rage, but his anger was clearly unjustified, considering he’d
done the same thing. In fact, what he’d done was even more intimate.
Confronting her would make him a hypocrite. If there was one thing he despised,
it was a man who pretended to have virtues he didn’t actually
possess, and he was that man at the moment.
