You only get one chance in The Gardener's Ice Maiden #MWTease #Romance

Hello and a warm welcome to you on MidWeekTease hosted by Sandra Bunino.

Every Wednesday on MidWeekTease, authors and writers give a peep into their published work or work-in-progress. You are welcome to join us.

It is with great pleasure I share from Flirty & Feisty Romance fourth Novel - The Gardener's Ice Maiden, published in Dec 2010 for NaNoWrimo.

I wrote this book when I wondered what the outcome would be, if a skilled gardener with aspiration took on a gardening job with a dentist and decided to get into her bed and into her son's life as well.

In today's tease, Oliver Gbadeyan is on his way to attend an interview conducted by the woman his heart longs for - Olivia Gleave.

Enjoy!
Teaser -The Gardener's Ice Maiden

Oliver was agitated.

But there was no turning back from here. This was what he’d wanted for as long as he could remember. Certainly, it was his private yearning that had brought Olivia back to town. Pulling himself upright as advised by the helpful Agency staff when he’d asked for tips for a successful interview, he knocked on the imposing door.

‘Do come in,’ retorted a sexy, feminine voice from within. The sound of her voice was enough to make him fail this all important interview.

Couldn’t she just offer him this job without this grilling part? He’d never attended an interview of any kind before now, because he’d never needed to.

Walking into her fanciful, modern study full of books from the floor to the ceiling, he caught a glimpse of her sitting behind a swivel chair in the far right hand corner of the room. To her left was a widescreen, flat panel monitor. She had papers in front of her and a purple pen in her right hand.

When Olivia saw the imposing, dark-skinned figure of the man approaching her in a stunning, pale purple shirt that looked like a designer label, and a smart, dark, tailored suit, she couldn’t help herself but to rise up from her comfortable, sitting position.

His hair was styled in an African way…that was very attractive and he appeared simply too clean…too polished, too stylish, for the job she was interviewing for. Could he have walked into the wrong venue?

After speaking with four other potential employees, she was bored wondering if that was all the Agency could come up with. But then, they did fit the bill of prospective gardeners’ adequately. From their outlook to their aptitude, there wasn’t a doubt in her mind they were indeed, gardeners. Interestingly, she’d being looking for a little bit more.

Maybe, this fine looking, well-built, well-turned out man had turned up in the wrong venue for his interview. His eyes were dark and unreadable. He exuded sugar bag loads of confidence and a magnetic aura.

‘Hello. Perhaps…maybe…you’re in the wrong place…?’ she croaked, clasping her hands together.

So why was she stammering? She was the interviewer for goodness sake! Not some lily-livered job hunter!

Taking in her lovely turquoise blue, shift dress that had multi-layers from her cleavage to her hips, he didn’t miss out her long stretch of light-skinned legs in matching heels. He noted her jewelry was limited to balls of pearls and gold bracelet.

His eyes rolled over her trendy hairstyle that was different…sleek…chic. She had a quirky fringe in front just the way a lot of celebrities favoured and shoulder length, bronze hair that nestled her face perfectly.

He swallowed his saliva as he finally stood only inches away from this girl turned woman he’d had the prickle for since he was in secondary school. Extending out his hand, he responded to her stuttering question.

‘Hello, I believe you’re looking for a gardener?’ he’d instantly switched on his heavy-weight, baritone pitch just for effect.

You only get one chance in life sometimes, so why waste it?

Will Olivia kick out her Gardener or will she give in? The Gardener's Ice Maiden #Contemporary #Romance

As this is the wonderful season of romance and love, I want to share the personality and interests of our leading female character in Flirty & Feisty Romance fourth Novel - The Gardener’s Ice Maiden in this incisive character interview.

What's your full name? Describe your looks (include colour of hair & eyes) and personality?

Olivia Gleave is my name. I have shoulder length, straight blond hair dyed bronze with light blue eyes.

After all I have been through, I’ll describe my personality as cautious, reserved and unable to trust as quickly as I would like to. Is that a bad thing? I'm not sure.

Where do you live and where does your family originate from? Do you have siblings? Tell us how old you  are today?

My family lives in a small town called New Ferry, Merseyside, located on the Wirral Peninsula in the North West of England. I recently returned from studying and working in the United States. It is nice to be back home, even if not everyone is pleased to have me back. A few people, including someone who is dear to me believes am better off getting lost in America!

I have a younger sister and I’m twenty something years old. Women don’t reveal their ages!

What do you do for a living? Are you religious? Are you athletic? What do you  do for leisure?

I trained as a dentist, but I have recently branched off to dental consultancy. Running my new business and consulting in a hospital keeps me mentally and physically occupied.

My family are Christians and so I am, but living it out on a daily basis can be quite challenging. God help me.

I can say I am fit but there isn’t much room in my life for sports. Too busy with work most of the time. For leisure, I try to play with my son and do right by him.

Are you in a relationship or do you have a crush on someone? Describe him to our readers?

I’m not in a relationship. Well...that isn’t entirely true. There’s someone who has his eyes and naughty fingers on me but he doesn’t fit into my world. No...that’s not completely true.

Okay, I don’t want a relationship at the moment, but my fluttering heart isn’t cooperating. I think I may have a crush on the handsome, deep voice Nigerian gardener I pay to spruce up my garden. That’s an awkward position to be in as a professional woman. Why won’t my immature heart consider the many medical doctors I work with on a daily basis?

Oliver Gbade Pedro is great with his hands...in my garden. When he bends over to uproot weeds or plant flowers, his firm butt pushes up at me as I peep through my bedroom window. His big sized, well toned and attractive muscle leaves me gasping for air and sweating at night.

How did you meet him? Is there anything noteworthy about your meeting? What draws you to him?

At an interview I organized to recruit a gardener whose sole job is to turn the dead ground in my new home to a place of beauty. It was poor judgement on my path to hire someone so confident, so cocky and outrageously handsome as Oliver to tend my garden. He wants to tend my life!

Oh, his African hair-style fascinates me. I can’t stop staring at him.

And what’s so irresistible about him is the fact that he never does what I ask of him. He drives me nuts.

Why is he the one you want to spend the rest of your life with? Do you want to have children?

Who says I want to spend the rest of my life with Oliver? If he plays his card right, we may have something deep going on but for now, I am taking it a day at a time. I have a nine year old son already. If I meet the right man...who knows? I might have more kids.

Have you ever cheated on your lover?

No, I haven’t. Why would I do that? If I want out, I’ll step out of the relationship.

What's the most embarrassing moment of your life?

Finding out I was pregnant at eighteen. I wanted the earth to open up and swallow me alive instead of facing my sanctimonious mother and the scandal that followed.

The Gardener's Ice Maiden - Blurb

Will the Ice Queen thaw?
When a single mum and brilliant dental consultant Olivia Gleave woke up to the reality that she was entangled in her gardener’s snare, she found it laughable. But when she found out too late that he's an ex-convict and an ex-gang member, it is confirmation their paths will lead to nowhere.
His pride is at stake

What the arrogant gardener wants, he pursues vigorously. Oliver Gbadeyan Pedro set his eyes on the well-bred, blue-blood, Ice Queen of the prominent Gleave’s family Manor. In his bid to get her, he paid a huge price... His sacrifice comes back to haunt him in the way he least expects. Will his search for the woman who is completely out of his financial, social and moral status be a total waste of time? Or do they have more in common than they both realize?
Come on board for this emotionally relaxing experience.

What Makes a Movie or Book Hero Wonderful to the Point Your Toes Curl?

Welcome to the Winter Wonder Man Blog Hop hosted by H.D Thomson. It runs from January 16 - 19th.

This is an absolutely exciting hop with over fifty blogs participating.

What Makes a Movie or Book Hero Wonderful to the Point Your Toes Curl?

From my point of view, what makes a hero wonderful to the point my toes curl is a combination of looks, character and the story.

A hero has his hold on me from the start, if he's gorgeous! Yes, I'm a sucker for good looks in a movie or in a book. If I want it any other way, I'll gladly turn to reality.

For my toes to curl, my heart to warm and to sustain my interest the hero has to be true to himself, have strength of character, show consistency, be nice but have a mind of his own.

I love heroes who dish out ultimatum and follow through until they get results. Again, he must have just the right amount of arrogance mixed with subtle humility. Sounds complex? He's the ultimate package!

The hero that captures my heart is sexy and wild, loyal and kind but has an edge to him and does the unpredictable.

He's a package of attraction and connection.

Bradley James, Kevin Costner, Denzel Washington sure make me swoon.

STOLEN VALENTINE KISS - Blurb

One broken heart. Two grieving minds.

One broken heart. Two grieving minds.
To Lorna Ibe, Departmental Manager with one of London's multi-channel retailers, Valentine's Day lost its romantic flavour years ago. An unplanned holiday to New Jersey is her perfect getaway from the stress and emotional turmoil locked in her heart, just what she needs to take her mind off the fleeting holiday. That's until she runs into Logan.

Magazine publisher, Logan Blake has had his fair share of stress in the past few years. When his sister asks him to drop off old clothes to charity, he has a minor accident in front of the charity shop where Lorna volunteers. When he sets eyes on her bare midriff as she wipes the display window, he clears his busy schedule to volunteer his time. Two burdened hearts afraid to get entwined.

One Stolen Valentine Kiss. Will Valentine season bring them romance or will their fears keep them apart?

THE GARDENER's ICE MAIDEN #Excerpt

At the foot of the stairs, Olivia came to a screeching halt. The sight, a few yards in front of her, left her totally speechless and breathless...

In her opulent bespoke kitchen, the man she’d seen picking weeds and digging flower beds only an hour ago wearing stained green tee shirt, dark trousers, muddy boots and gloves is now preparing breakfast as if he's a celebrity TV chef on live television.

Oliver looked up in time to see her drooling mouth. He flashed her a winning grin as he stirred the bubbling liquid in the milk pan. She looked to her left, on the island extension were they ate quick meals, were two plates complete with cutlery and mugs.

Taking in the scene, she understood why her son had dismissed her belated offer to prepare his breakfast.

Contrary to the instant guilt that came over her at Shawn’s outburst earlier, she realized her son hadn’t suffered neglect at all. Mr. Gardener had extended his scope to providing breakfast for her son and doing school runs behind her back!

Oliver's practically taking over the running of her home. She covered her face with her hand. No, it is more of acute embarrassment. And perhaps, with a tinge of anger? She couldn’t put her finger on exactly what she found so appalling about the scenario playing out in front of her.

While she stood like a robot at the foot of the stairs, Shawn came bounding down the stairs, looking at his wristwatch at the same time.

‘Hi mate,’ Oliver called out animatedly at the sight of her son pulling his schoolbag over one shoulder.

Oliver’s voice was like hot, liquid honey flowing through her veins…

This is all going badly this morning.

If she asks Oliver to get out of her kitchen, she risks offending her son who’s obviously settled into the routine of eating hot, freshly prepared meals for breakfast.

‘Come over and join us mum,’ her son called out as he dumped his bag on top of the kitchen worktop. ‘Never mind, am sure Oliver doesn’t have enough for three.’ She said faintly when she found her voice.

‘There’s always extra. Isn’t there an extra portion left, Oliver?’ her son asked, as he went round, pumping the gardener on the arm like chummy friends do.

Her stomach almost fell out at the sight...

Issues Affecting Having Children - #Africa vs #UK

Welcome to Advice Bench!

I have opted to blog about having children, their gender, childlessness and single motherhood. I have lived in the UK for almost six years and my mind willingly draw comparisons on a few touchy issues.

WHEN TO HAVE KIDS?

In Africa, having children immediately after wedlock is not only expected, but
extensively celebrated.

Having children is the next step after tying the knot.

Having just one child is frowned upon because every child needs a playmate. One child family ranks only slightly higher than childlessness.

In many cases, to be in the good book of your in-law, your family and well wishers, you should aim to have three kids within the first six years of your marriage.

Here in the UK, the story is different. Couples have a wide range of options - not to have kids, to have only one child or to wait for several years before deciding to have kids. There's no societal or family pressure to have kids. Or is there?

1. NUMBER OF CHILDREN

In Africa, ideally, after having three kids, you can take a deep breath. You're let off the hook from family & societal pressure. You're respected and honoured as a deserving wife.

The number of children to have in the UK is not up for discussion. It is the prerogative of the couple.

However, the media and public get involved when couples with large families (e.g. seven children) 'harass' the Council to give them a bigger house at the expense of the tax payer.

2. GENDER OF CHILDREN

In Africa, you're also let off the pressure pot if you have three boys or two girls and one boy, or two boys and a girl!

If you have three girls, you will need to go back to the birthing table in no time at all.

Except of course you want to hear the usual rhetoric about girls being unable to perpetuate the family name. You'll be told that boys carry on the family name.

In other words, if you don't have a male child, you're treading on shaky marital ground.

A family member had two girls. She toyed with the idea of not having any more kids. She was called aside and advised by a 'concerned' in-law to try again. She was told in clear terms, 'if you don't
have a son, you have no hold on your husband'. And so, she tried and had a son. The relief was palpable.

While in the UK, gender is not even a talking point. Male or female children are entitled to the same rights and consideration. The Queen recently made a proclamation. If Prince William had given birth to a daughter, she would have been third in line to the throne.

3. CHILDLESSNESS

Ohhow the woman without child suffers emotional trauma in Africa! My late mother-in-law was childless for ten years! I have heard about her many unbearable sufferings at the hands of many who insulted, mistreated and cursed her. God blessed her with two kids eventually.

Childlessness is almost intolerable in Africa. Other options such as adoption and surrogacy is still fairly unpopular because of cultural & other issues.

No matter how poor a family is in Africa, they will not deliberately decide to remain childless. Never! We learn that children make the family complete.

In the UK, couples can decide not to have a child. It could be for health or selfish reasons, or the high cost of child care. How can that be? What if their parents had decided not to have kids?

Adoption, Surrogacy and IVF are normal options to explore for childless couples without facing stigmatization. Mothers who adopt babies are entitled to maternity leave. That's commendable.

4. CHILDREN DISCIPLINE

In Africa, children are scolded and flogged when they act foolishly. Children are routinely rebuked by any adult, teacher, neighbour or relative. Children can be whipped into line in public places without fear of being cautioned or thrown into jail for assault.

Teachers in Africa have the power and authority to discipline children. They just need to be better remunerated for their good work.

In the UK, the story is the exact opposite. A child being rude to elders in a London bus is overlooked by all. How can this be?

In schools, children have more rights than the teachers employed to teach and discipline them. Teachers are stressed and their hands are tied when students continually offend. Thankfully, in my children's school, letters of good or bad behaviour are sent home. For that, my husband and I are grateful. This helps us keep a tight rein on their behaviour.

We need to make teaching honourable by giving teachers more power to discipline students.

At home, neighbours are silent when kids exhibit anti-social behaviour. Children freely ring the Police for help when they are spanked by their parents.

How can the society rely on the Police to discipline all the children who misbehave? Is this a sustainable model for children discipline?

Parents need to have freedom to discipline their children for the good of the society.

I know from media reports that children abuse exist, but this is an exception rather than the rule. Is this enough reason to bar parents from executing their given role to discipline their children?

We need an academy to train parents on how to raise children successfully. Without previous experience to rely on, parents do the best they can.

5. SINGLE MOTHERHOOD

The question then arises of why are many men refusing to take responsibility for their kids in the UK? Were they unaware of the pregnancies ? Or do the mothers
refuse to allow their involvement? Or are they simply running away from their responsibilities?

The group of people confidently having kids in the UK are the young girls.

There's no stigma associated with single motherhood. Many celebrities are children of single mothers. Thankfully, single mothers get financial help from the State.

In Africa, many married couples stay together for the sake of their children. There's stigma associated with single motherhood. African culture takes pride in families holding together in the face of infidelity, polygamy & other difficulties.

Young girls who fall pregnant instead of completing their academics are aware of the heavy price to pay. They risk being disowned by their parents, face societal rejection and ridicule. There's no welfare from government to help them out.

Fathers must try harder to be part of their children's lives. If they made out with their kids mums, they should put in a lot more effort to shape their children's future.

African countries should make provision for the many mothers (especially widows) toiling to raise their children.

In my fourth novel - THE GARDENER'S ICE MAIDEN, single mum, Olivia Gleaves had been initially forced by her mother to abandon the care of her baby to her aunt so
she could continue her education.

When she eventually took responsibility for her nine year old son, she faced the uphill task of trying to understand him, establishing a relationship and setting boundaries.

Adding the distracting and unwanted attention from her Gardener to the mix presents tingling challenges. Who says parenting is an easy task?

Find out how Olivia copes...in THE GARDENER's ICE MAIDEN.
