“Is this yours?”
The blue scarf that had warmed Ranielle’s neck moments ago now dangled from the lean fingers of a guy’s lightly-tanned hand. A guy she had not met officially, or spoken to before. Blocking her view, he grinned down at her from up there at his prime height of at least six two or three. It was not a get-naked-for-me grin. It was a friendly show of teeth. Straight, polished teeth.
“Yeah.” Raising an eyebrow, she grinned back and stretched out her hand. “Where did you find my runaway scarf I knitted with love?”
Though she had been at the Autumn Community Fair to sell home baked cakes for a couple of hours, it was only now he stopped by her booth when she had only a few cupcakes left to be sold.
He raised both eyebrows in return and approached her behind the cake sale table.
“I don’t believe we’ve met. I’m Byron Hardy Grey.”
Tickly-tingly sensations drove through her tits because of the weight in gold of his deep voice. Hazel eyes dimmed at her and his sharpened jawline beautified with dark-brown overnight stubble left her feeling awkward because of her baby bump. For now, her belly was her identity. Pregnant and single were her descriptors.
I know who you are, she almost admitted out loud but she caught her tongue in time. Swallowing, she said.
“I’m Ranielle Regan Baker. Call me, Ranielle.”
“May I?” He lifted up her scarf with both hands.
Ranielle blinked, taken aback by his need to ask for permission. Before he strolled over to her cake sale booth inside the Community Hall, she had seen many women at the Fair swoon over him in the small town of Rudee Heights, Virginia Beach. And, she had also heard of his escapades.
“If there isn’t any woman here who would slander my name in this small town after you do it. Otherwise, I can tie my scarf around my own neck.”
“Do what people say bother you, Ranielle?”
Giving a quick shrug, she lifted up her hair with both hands to give him access to her neck since he refused to hand over the scarf.
“Although I’m new in town, Byron, I know what most folks think about me.”
Chuckling, he held the two ends of her blue and orange woollen scarf and tossed it around her neck twice with a tender touch. With his breath warm and fresh around her face, he knotted the scarf loosely for her, adding a cute grin at the end. Instantly, she felt her baby kick inside her belly as her heart leaped with unexpected pleasure.
“You look radiant. If I say, you’re a beautiful woman, would that be too forward of me?”
Careful not to join the long line-up of women eager to fall at his feet, she gave him a one-shoulder casual shrug.
“Only if you say it to every woman you meet. Do you?”
“Only when it’s true. I won’t take back the compliment. I mean it, Ranielle. You’re very beautiful.”
“Thank you. I would’ve repaid you with a compliment but I don’t want you to get big-headed or misinterpret my intentions.”
“What are your intentions?”
“I’ve got none toward you.”
“Humour me, Ranielle. If you were going to repay the compliment what would you say?”
“That you’re handsome. Very handsome. But you already know that. Don’t you?”
“It never hurts to hear it once more. Does it?”
“I guess not.”
Their eyes maintained a fiery connection that would not have been broken even if the roof of the hall had fallen on them. She felt her skin heat up from his closeness.
“Fill me in. What have you heard?”
“About what?”
Still trapped to steady her gaze on his own, she blinked and exhaled. Looking away at last, she searched her thoughts. What had they talked about before the fluttering in my stomach started…
“What you’ve heard said about you.”
“Thanks for returning my scarf. Everyone is staring.”
“Don’t look at anyone else but me. You were going to tell me…”
When she gazed up at him again, his eyes narrowed and his thin top lip and enviable baby-pink bottom lip were pressed together. The medium length, dark-brown hair with blond highlights appeared to be in a fine tousle as if he pushed his fingers through his hair quite often. His nose, strong and long with a narrow flatness along the bridge enhanced his sexy, roguish look. But his striking appearance was none of her business. The baby kicking inside of her was her one and only priority.
“Coming from a city, I guess I’m not used to my personal life being everybody’s business. Get my drift?” she explained without a smile. Unlike other women in Rudee Heights, the last thing she wanted to do was give him the impression she needed his attention in any small way.
“I do.”
“Can I buy a few cupcakes please?” Although, the slender brunette–with flawless skin and cute curves–pointed at Ranielle’s cake stand, the young woman in her mid-twenties had her light-blue eyes directed at Byron’s.
“How many would you like?” Ranielle gestured with one hand to get the woman’s attention.
“Four.”
While she bagged the woman’s cake in a white paper bag, the woman eyed Byron, yet he kept his gaze on Ranielle as if no one else was around.
“Hi Byron,” the brunette smiled coyly after sometime. “I expected you at Tinder’s Bar yesterday evening. You didn’t call to say you weren’t coming.”
“Tina, I didn’t promise you I’d show up.” He half-turned to face his accuser. “My days and evenings are packed. I made that clear when you asked me.”
“Maybe tonight then?” Tina winked. “I’ll tell you what I’ve got planned for us when you show up.”
“My evening is already taken, I’m afraid.”
“What about Sunday?”
“Also scheduled unfortunately.”
Take the hint, Tina, Ranielle almost spat out, biting her tongue instead. The moment the woman moved along, she eyeballed him.
“Turning her down? Why?”
“Can’t you tell I’m not interested?”
“Tina couldn’t. Poor thing.”
“Don’t feel sorry for her. She’s got her hands full.”
“Oh.” She smiled. “When I was growing up in Kansas City, I always wished I lived in a small town. Don’t get me wrong, Kansas City is amazing in so many ways.”
“Why is that? Most city folks hate small towns.”
“I always wanted to belong to a community where everyone knew each other, looked out for one another and touched lives with small acts of kindness like we’re doing here now.”
“What changed that longing?”
Thrusting both hands in his blue jeans pants pocket, he had the tails of his open-front, fashionable black and white lattice overcoat hanging behind. His roll-neck black top tucked into his jeans framed his upper body such that no one missed his chiselled chest and six-pack muscles.
“Are you sure you want to listen to a pregnant woman download a little?”
