“Nice to know. African American heritage isn’t common here, but
I love your accent and the huskiness in your voice.”
Taking her right hand in his, he dropped a kiss on her
knuckles. “That’s the nicest thing you’ve said to me. Thank you.” The warmth of
her earthen skin and amber coloured eyes made his toes curl in his boots.
Slowly, Emem wrapped her fingers around his on the table, causing
her heat to flow through his arms to his chest.
For a few minutes, they sat in silence, soaking up the
emotions crisscrossing between their fingers.
Emem shut her eyes briefly and
when she opened them, he had pushed forward with his face now only an inch from
hers. Her gaze dropped to his lips and he was truly tempted to kiss her. But his
eyes searched hers as his lips hovered over hers.
Runo's chest tightened as he
waited for Emem to lean just a little closer so he could taste her lips. Runo was of
two minds. To kiss or not to kiss Emem on their first date.
A whiff of her perfume warmed his nostrils and he dragged in
a deep breath as she closed her eyes again.
Just kiss her, he
almost groaned. At last, he touched one finger to her lips and Emem jerked, her
eyes fluttering open.
Amusement lurked in his eyes and in that moment he knew he
was attracted to a woman who, only hours ago was a stranger to him in Barrow-in-Furness,
a hilarious notion at best.
“Should we call an end to the night?” he asked, pulling back.
If he was not such an idiot he would sweep her lips up in a
strong kiss. After all, this was Christmas season. Something held him back. He
did not know what it was yet.
“Not yet,” Emem disagreed, sounding as if she had finally
coughed up the courage to express the need in her eyes.
Runo gave her a wide smile. “I want to give you a warm hug.
Can I?” Instantly, the feelings inside him grew stronger at the prospect of
holding her in his arms.
