Writing a Romance Story: 9 More Things to Keep in Mind - Part 2 #ASMSG

Two weeks ago, I blogged about 8 Things to Keep in Mind When Writing a New Romance Story .

Today, I'm concluding the post with 9 additional things to consider as you write your first romance novel.

Remember, this post is for upcoming and new writers.

In a nutshell, here are 9 tips to keep in mind when writing your story:

 9. NOVEL LENGTH: Don’t worry about the length of your novel. You can start with novellas (short length novels).

I have two short length novels: My Steamy Novella, Forbidden Dance is 28,860 words and my Tender Novella, Wild Whispers is only 18,410 words. My longest novel, Tempting Desire ~ A Body Tingling Romance is 69,720 words.

10. SECONDARY CHARACTERS: Of course, throw in other characters as you go along but not too many on the same page to confuse the reader. Introduce a character and give readers opportunity to ‘meet’ them. Only add secondary characters who add meaning to your story.

11. ROMANCE: Weave romantic tension from the start around the conflict. It could be eye contact, a touch, a smile or a wink between your lead characters.

All Flirty & Feisty Romance Novels have romantic tension woven into the conflict of my stories to give the reader an intense emotional experience.

12. TWISTS: Don’t forget to throw in twists & turns to add a bit of zest to your story. How you do this is entirely up to you. It is what differentiates one author from another. Find your own writing style and voice.

13. FEEDBACK: Get someone you trust to read your story just to give you general feedback on your characters, story line etc.

14. PROOF READING: Above all, get your book proof read and edited by someone who is skilled, not necessarily at a high cost. You could swap stories with an author you admire and get them to edit for you. Readers demand a story with fewer mistakes.

15. BOOK COVER: Don’t forget to get an attractive book cover, it is the first thing that interests readers. My cover designer, Maria Lazarou of Obsessed by Books Design creates attractive book covers and promo materials at super affordable prices.

16. CHALLENGES: Believe me, as an indie author I have experienced my fair share of challenges but if you keep writing and you are not afraid to receive criticisms, you will stand the test of time.

17. PROMOTE: Remember, if you WRITE and you don’t PROMOTE your book, no reader will know you wrote a book. There are millions of books out there, so start promoting your work!

In my next post, I will share my experience on ways to promote your work for free. Keep visiting my blog.
