Writing a New Romance Story: 8 Tips to Keep in Mind #NewWriters #ASMSG

Welcome to Writing Tips

Forbidden Dance ~ A Steamy Novella is available on Amazon

Last week, I blogged about 7 Tips on How to Write a Blurb. It is now a popular post, shared by different writing groups on Facebook.

So today, I have decided to blog about things to keep in mind when you start writing a romance story. This post is for upcoming and new writers.

Now, I assume you want to write a new romance story. Do you have a title for your book yet? Don’t worry if you can’t think of a title. There are times, I complete writing a story before I decide on a title.

At the start of your very first romance story, a new writer will agonize about where to start, what to write and so on. In this post, hopefully, I will point you in the right direction.
In a nutshell, here are 8 tips to keep in mind when writing your first story:

1. PASSION: First of all, make sure writing is your passion. When challenges and criticisms come your way, your passion will keep you writing.

2. THEME: I suggest that you think about a broad theme to address in your book.

All Flirty & Feisty Romance Novels have different themes: Infidelity, Love triangle, Rape, Parental guidance, Family breakdown, Age difference, racial tension, single motherhood etc.

3. SETTING: Set your story in a town, city or country you live in or have visited. Over time, you can base your stories on cities you love but have not visited or you can create a fictional town. All you have to do is research the cities online.

4. LEAD CHARACTER PHOTOS:  One thing I find helpful at the start is to find photos of real people (models) online, to play my lead characters and write down their features. I imagine the play of emotions on their faces as I write.

5. CHARACTERS WITH SOUL: Give voice to characters who have heart and soul. Real people have personalities, families, friends, jobs, religion, culture and hobbies. So make sure you create characters with multidimensional characters as well. It helps readers relate to them.

6. WRITE: Write from your heart. I find that when I outline everything on paper and worry about how to write, it stops my creativity. Show how characters react, don't tell the reader.
Example from INDECENT ~ So Seductive, my new release:

“No way! It couldn’t be Mr. Malibu,” Elna spat through clamped teeth. “Not here, not now.” She curved her body to the right, away from his view.

OR

"No way! It couldn't be Mr. Malibu," Elna said, adding, "Not here, not now." Then Elna

avoided him.

My question: which statement do you think gives the reader a peek into exactly how Elna feels about seeing Mr. Malibu?

7. CONFLICT: Create conflict between the characters. The conflict will drive the entire story from start to finish. It is the problem your characters will have to overcome to find love at the end. The conflict could be internal or external.

8. ROMANCE: Weave romantic tension from the start around the conflict you created. It could be eye contact shared between the hero and heroine, a touch, a smile or wink.

Then gradually increase the romantic tension to a caress, a peck, a kiss and so on. And afterwards, depending on their interaction, their romance should deepen to make the reader feel their passion.

If you want to learn how to build in romantic tension into your story, you can pick up my new release: INDECENT ~ So Seductive, an Interracial Romance Novel out now on
